COVID-19 vaccination to prevent serious illness caused by new COVID-19 variant
Phnom Penh: As we look ahead, it is highly encouraged that the general public prepare to receive the COVID-19 vaccination to help mitigate a potential COVID-19 surge, along with adhering to the “3 Do’s and 3 Don’ts” measures.
In light of the recent emergence of new COVID-19 variants, particularly JN.1, in neighbouring countries and worldwide, the Ministry of Health of Cambodia issued a press release titled “Protecting Yourself from COVID-19 Infection” on May 12, 2025 (attached herewith for your reference).
It is essential for everyone, especially those at higher risk, including older adults, individuals with pre-existing health conditions, and those with weakened immune systems, to remain proactive as we anticipate the ongoing efforts necessary to prevent virus transmission and to get vaccinated ahead of any potential infections.
We invite everyone to come together collectively to safeguard ourselves and our community, especially the most vulnerable, from a future COVID-19 surge. The Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine is set to be widely available across all 25 provinces and municipalities at local health centres and state hospitals. We strongly encourage you to seize this opportunity and get vaccinated before any rise in virus transmission occurs.
Please remember that the “3 Do’s and 3 Don’ts” measures and the COVID-19 vaccination remain practical tools that individuals can practice now. These strategies serve as valuable preparations to help lessen the severity of illness, hospitalisations, and deaths, reflecting the lessons we learned from our experiences in 2020-2022.
While Cambodia is currently not witnessing a surge in COVID-19 cases, it’s essential to recognise that “prevention is better than cure.” With this in mind, we are actively promoting readiness and the adoption of preventive measures moving forward.
Working together can enhance our resilience against future COVID-19 invasions and foster a healthier community. Preparing ourselves today strengthens our immunity and inspires hope for a brighter tomorrow. Thank you for your ongoing support and commitment as we navigate the road ahead.by Dr. Or Vandine
